Sunroom vs. Eze-Breeze vs. Screen Room: What's the Difference?

These terms get used interchangeably in the field, but the products are meaningfully different. Here is a plain-language breakdown of each one.

Why the Terminology Gets Confusing

Homeowners use these terms loosely. A customer might call and ask for a sunroom when they actually want a screen room, or describe an Eze-Breeze enclosure as a sunroom because that is the closest word they know. Contractors understand the differences, but explaining them clearly and quickly is part of the sales conversation.

The three product categories represent meaningfully different levels of enclosure, insulation, and cost. Understanding where each one sits helps both contractors and homeowners make the right call for the climate, the budget, and the intended use.

Option 01

Traditional Sunroom

A traditional sunroom is a fully enclosed addition with glass or insulated glazing panels, a solid roof, and typically some form of climate control, either connected to the home's HVAC system or served by a dedicated unit. It is designed to be usable year-round in most climates.

Because it is a conditioned space, a traditional sunroom is treated more like an interior room addition than an outdoor structure. It typically requires a full building permit, a foundation, and construction that meets the same code standards as the rest of the home.

Traditional sunrooms are the highest-cost option in this category, but they also add the most usable square footage and the most resale value. They are the right choice when the homeowner wants a space that functions as a room, not just an outdoor living area.

Option 02

Eze-Breeze Enclosures

Eze-Breeze is a brand name owned by PGT Industries. It refers to a system of vinyl-glazed panels that slide or fold open, allowing a porch or patio enclosure to transition between open-air and enclosed depending on the weather. The panels are not insulated glass, they are a lighter, more affordable alternative that provides weather protection without full climate control.

Eze-Breeze enclosures are most commonly used for three-season applications. They keep out wind, rain, and bugs, and they extend the usable season of a porch or patio significantly. In mild climates, some homeowners use them year-round. In colder climates, they are typically not heated.

Because the panels are not structural glazing, Eze-Breeze enclosures are generally less expensive than traditional sunrooms and faster to install. They are a popular middle-ground option for homeowners who want more than a screen room but are not ready for the cost or commitment of a full sunroom addition.

Option 03

Screen Room

A screen room is the most basic enclosure type. It uses screen panels, that are typically aluminum-framed, to enclose a porch or patio. It provides no weather protection beyond keeping insects out. Rain, wind, and temperature pass through freely.

Screen rooms are the most affordable option and the simplest to permit and build. They are the right choice when the primary goal is bug protection and the homeowner is comfortable with an outdoor environment. In warm climates with mild weather, a screen room can be a highly functional outdoor living space for most of the year.

Which Option Fits Which Use Case

The right choice depends on climate, budget, and how the homeowner plans to use the space:

Year-round use in a cold climate

Traditional sunroom with climate control

Three-season use, moderate budget

Eze-Breeze enclosure on an existing porch or patio

Bug protection only, warm climate

Screen room

Maximum resale value

Traditional sunroom

Fastest installation timeline

Screen room or Eze-Breeze

Sunroom Design Lab Designs for All Three

Sunroom Design Lab produces permit-ready drawings and photorealistic renderings for traditional sunrooms, Eze-Breeze enclosures, screen rooms, patio enclosures, three-season rooms, and deck additions. The design process is the same regardless of enclosure type.  Accurate dimensions, elevation views, framing details, and a rendering that shows the homeowner exactly what they are getting.

If you are working across multiple enclosure types, the portfolio shows examples of each. The design packet is the same deliverable whether the project is a fully conditioned sunroom or a basic screen room enclosure.
